{Review} Under the Influence by L.B. Simmons

Dalton,
I loved you once. A love I thought irrevocable. A love I mistakenly believed could transcend both time and circumstance. Under the influence of my dimwitted, naïve, traitorous heart, I became intoxicated with what I now know was simply a figment of my self-indulgent imagination. So drunk on the feeling, I couldn’t see what was right in front of my face. So foolishly enamored, I blindly followed my heart into the depths of an emotion that would ravage me.
Years later, I know now what I wish I knew then. I am stronger. Smarter. Tougher. I will not allow myself to be broken again.

I loved you.

I raged for you.

I wept for you.

And now, I’m letting you go.

Author’s Note: Under the Influence is the journey of two childhood friends that spans the course of five pivotal years in their lives. It is a story about their discovery of true friendship as it blossoms into first love, their experience of crucial sacrifice and ultimate betrayal, and their endurance of agonizing heartbreak on the way to finding lasting redemption.

I have to admit, this book was really rough. The grab your heart, squeeze it as tight as it possibly can, let it go, and just when the pressure is easing, start squeezing all over again... This process is continued until the very end, when the heart is finally set free.

It was all very emotional and heartbreaking but with a silver lining that you are holding out hope it will end happily...

This story is told in a dual POV, with alternating chapters and it packed more of a punch being written this way because we get all the feels from both main characters in the story. When I say pack a punch, I really mean it. Because just as I was recovering from one POV, the other one gut punches me and I spent majority of the book with tears in my eyes that at different points of the story it became hard to read through them and I was forced to take a break.

It was all very raw and powerful with a hint of poeticness that bleeds through the paper. It was true love, tragedy, hopelessness, and revenge all rolled up in a little book that made me want to rip my own emotions out so I didn't have to feel them anymore.

I am no newbie when it comes to L.B's writing. I have read all but one of her books and I know how much of an amazing writer she is. I knew it was going to be good going into it because it had her name on it. I wasn't wrong. I was wrapped up in the story almost immediately and I didn't want the journey to end but I wanted the powerful punches to stop knocking me sideways.

At some point, I think it was a little too much, too many feelings being discussed at once and it just needed to be broken up a little bit so I could catch my breath.

Dalton was fierce and protective. He had a fucked up childhood and took comfort from someone who was just using him. He had so many demons to overcome and I liked the journey I was taken on with him. I got to see him grow, love, and accept everything that happened in his life.

Spencer is like one of those people who has a positive outlook on everything and tries to get people to see their full potential without pushing them. I saw her change in this story. Turn bitter and angry. It was heartbreaking.

I think the letters were the worst and best part of this story. They held so much depth and added so much character to the story. Reading them were like getting a glimpse inside both of their souls and having them exposed right there for everyone to read. They were sad but I liked how LB did this because even as years passed, I got to see the mindset of both characters.

All in all I really enjoyed this Dalton and Spencer's story. Even with the material being so heavy with emotions, it was still a great story. I would advise not reading it if you are in a great mood because it will quickly diminish by the end.

I give this book a 4 "Emotional gut punches" Stars!!!

This book will be LIVE on May 11th!!!!

Excerpt

Spencer POV:
Dalton’s voice is thick as he begins to speak. “I’m sorry, Spence. I know I hurt you—”

I shake my head dismissively. “You didn’t hurt me. I’m just tired.”
The corners of his mouth dip downward and he lifts his hand, placing his palm against my cheek and swiping the moisture with his thumb. My heart would typically melt at the tenderness of the gesture, but now I find it only aggravates me. I narrow my eyes and shove his hand away from my face.

“Don’t do that. Don’t do something you don’t mean.”
Channeling my sorrow, anger begins to churn as I step away and turn my back on him. My bare feet carry me to the wooden rail that lines my porch and I brace my good hand against it, leaning forward and inhaling deeply.

Dalton growls with frustration. “What the fuck? Of course I mean it. The last thing I want to do is hurt you, Spence. I’m trying to apologize here.”
I laugh humorlessly and turn to face him. “For what, exactly? For stalking me on my date tonight?”
His blue eyes now heat with a different emotion as they slice to mine. “The date in which you were being manhandled by some fucking loser who asked you out for no other reason than to get back at me?” He scoffs openly. “You should be thanking me.”
I cease the fight to hold back my tears, permitting them to flow freely as I respond. “I handled it, did I not? I don’t need you to protect me, Dalton. I can take care of myself.”
He chuckles, unsmiling, as he removes his cap and throws it to the ground, dragging his fingers through his hair in irritation. My glare hardens as I continue my rant.

“And yes, he asked me out to get back at you. Are you apologizing for that? Or are you apologizing for the fact that because of your stupid crusade against me dating anyone EVER, I was so excited to be asked out that I accepted a date with said fucking loser because I wanted to know what it would be like to actually be wanted for once?” Not entirely true, but true enough to make my point.
My breaths are heavy and my pulse is thrumming rapidly through my entire body. I angrily wipe away the tears as I inquire, “Why is that, Dalton? Why is it that you don’t want me, but no one else is allowed to have me?” I shake my head in frustration as I stumble on my words. “I just…I don’t understand.” My voice trembles and my chin quivers with the admission.

Dalton heavy boots sound as he stalks across the porch. I avert my gaze, but once he’s in front of me, he curls his fingers around my chin and pulls my face into his line of sight. His eyes burn into mine as they narrow in earnest. “You think I don’t want you? Goddamn it, Spencer,” he bites, “I want you so much I can’t fucking breathe when I’m not with you. Every single time I force myself to walk away from you, I feel nothing but agony as the anger that simmers here,” he breaks to pound his closed fist on his chest, “breaks free and chars my insides with each step I take.”

His eyes begin to glisten and his jaw tightens as he shakes his head. “I can’t fucking breathe without you, don’t you get it? I want you so much that being without you is absolute torture.”
He swallows deeply and moisture seeps from my eyes at the sight of his exposed emotion as he continues. “I want you, Spence, but I can’t have you. I won’t allow it. You’re too good, too pure, too innocent, and just as your presence soothes me, mine will eventually flaw you. It’s inevitable, and I care too much for you to let that happen.”

I watch a lone tear fall from the corner of his eye before he concludes, “But you’re right. Even thinking about you with someone else, with someone else’s arms around you as you look into their eyes the same way you’re looking into mine right now, I just…” He casts his stare downward and shakes his head. “I just can’t. So I guess I’m just a selfish, heartless prick, because where does that leave you?”

The tear finally falls free from his chin, and I watch it strike the wood beneath our feet before placing my hands on the side of his face and forcing his eyes to mine. My voice trembles as I speak. “I know you like to control things, Dalton. That’s how you’ve learned to cope and I understand that, but you don’t control me. My feelings. My heart. And even though you feel you don’t deserve those things, that they’re not yours to have, you’re mistaken.”

I tighten my grip as he tries to look away and state with emphasis, “You ask where that leaves me? Well, it leaves me right in the same place, on this same porch, as I was six years ago when I met you. The day that all of those things you think you can’t have I willingly handed over without question.”
Releasing my hold, I turn away from him, knowing his refusal will absolutely destroy me as I state into the night air, “I have always belonged to you. I will always belong to you.  Regardless of what you’ve done, what you do, or what you will do, I will forever be yours. And that’s my choice to make, whether you choose me or not.”

{Review} Dragon's Lair by Chantal Fernando

Synopsis:
The first in a new sexy romance series from bestselling author Chantal Fernando about the bad boys of the Wind Dragons Motorcycle Club and the women who fall in love with them.
When I found my boyfriend cheating on me, I did something stupid.
Or should I say, someone?
Because of that mistake, I’m now stuck in a world I don’t belong in.
I’m a law student. They’re criminals. He’s the vice president of a motorcycle club. I’m a good girl with a strict upbringing. He’s my ex-boyfriend’s brother.
And I’m screwed.

I honestly didn't think I was going to like this book when I first got into it because I felt like I was reading the script to Sons of Anarchy. Motorcycle club... Check, Hot ass VP... Check... Rowdy bunch of members... Check.. An Irishman with scars... Check again...

You get where I am going with this...

But as I continued on, I found myself really into the writing, and the story. Even with the similarities with Sons, I still liked it and at one point didn't want to put it down. And lets be real, I will give my left tit to have Sons of Anarchy come back on. I miss those assholes and Jax's ass is definitely missed!

I loved Faye's character. She was feisty and could argue with anyone and they would find it cute or endearing. Even when she was getting in trouble, she always managed to find a way out of it. And with a room full of bikers, that is a real feat. She also talked shit to all of them and managed to get her foot inserted into her mouth a few times but like I said, she was always forgiven.

Sin was an asshole. But he was one of my favorite kind of assholes. An asshole with a heart of gold. He cared about Faye and his club and even when they both collided he managed to work it out.

(Sounds like Jax right?)... mmmm

Overall, this was an interesting read. I loved the story, the characters, the sex of course was hot and panty melting. It was also very quick. There wasn't much of a lull because of how quick it was. I think I needed a bit more of the characters because I was enjoying them and didn't want to say goodbye. I know there are more books coming from the different bikers but I really liked Faye, so hopefully the new bitches will be as pleasant as she was...

I give this first book a 4 "I want to ride Dex.. I mean on the back of his bike" Stars...

{Review} What If by Rebecca Donovan

What if you had a second chance to meet someone for the first time?

Cal Logan is shocked to see Nicole Bentley sitting across from him at a coffee shop thousands of miles from their hometown. After all, no one has seen or heard from her since they graduated over a year ago.

Except this girl isn't Nicole.

She looks exactly like Cal's shy childhood crush, but her name is Nyelle Preston and she has no idea who he is. This girl is impulsive and daring, her passion for life infectious. The complete opposite of Nicole. Cal finds himself utterly fascinated-and falling hard. But Nyelle is also extremely secretive. And the closer he comes to finding out what she's hiding, the less he wants to know.

When the secrets from the past and present collide, one thing becomes clear: Nothing is what it seems.

I read a lot of books... I mean, A LOT... Some books I read and can't even make it through the whole thing because of some particular reason; something pisses me off, something makes no sense, something happens that is too hard for me to get through, the list could go on and on. There are even some books that are so predictable, I skip to the end just to test my theory and then I am pissed at myself (and maybe a little at the author) for guessing right...

I didn't have any of these problems with What If. This book consumed me from the very beginning to the very end. It was a multi-layered, puzzle story that didn't make sense unless it was read from the very beginning to the very end and then even after reading the very last word, I wanted to read it again just to make sure I caught everything that was suppose to be in the book.

I was left feeling a little like this...

Each chapter revealed a little more insight into these character's world and even though I had a ton of guesses of what was happening, I didn't really GET IT until everything is revealed at the very end. And then when it ended, I was amazed with all the layering that this story entailed. It got confusing but everything is answered in the order it was suppose to be answered in and revealed just how it was supposed to be revealed.

Plus, it left me wondering about different scenarios in my own life, about what could have happened if something went a different way or if this or this happened instead of this... Although I am the type of person who hates looking back on my life and wondering what could have happened if something was changed because I believe that everything happens for a reason, I did take a step back and wonder about a few things and what would have happened if things were changed or didn't happen at all...

In the world of fiction that is so vast and ever-changing, it is nice to come across a story that sucks me in because of the storyline and the characters, rather than just superficial things like sex, obedience, dominance, and more sex.
Not saying those books are not as good, because I like my one-handed reading as much as the next book slut, but it is rare to find a book that can make me feel the chemistry and emotions so hard that sex has nothing to do with it, it is the real EMOTIONS, not the superficial ones.

Cal and .... (no spoils) had these emotions in spades. Even when I was confused, I could feel the underlying emotions that were being portrayed. The pain, heartache, happiness, loneliness, everything was there and presented when it was suppose to be presented. And lets face it, I am such a sucker for long time best friends and lovers that even if this puzzle wasn't presented how it was, I would have loved the pure innocence and romantic elements shown from the very beginning.

The secondary characters also added their own quirkiness and humor to the story, which made it that much better, and I wasn't left feeling that they overshadowed the main characters. They were there to add substance and more heart but they stayed mostly to the background.

I don't know what more to say about this book other than you will regret not picking it up. If the author herself can't get you to read it by just her name alone, then take it from me, YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!!!

I wish I could give this more stars than the 5 that is offered on different reading sites, but I can't, so I will say I give this book 5 "YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK" stars!!!

Set to be released on SEPTEMBER 16th... TOMORROW!!!!.... TOMORRROOOWWWW!!!

WHAT IF TEASERS

About this Author...
Optimism seeps from every pore of my body. I truly believe that what's supposed to happen... will! In that regard, I don't know how to give up; it's not part of my biological make up.

I'm a passionate (and some would say, overly enthusiastic) person. I learn by doing (and have been burned more times that I'd like to admit), but I will always throw my entire self into whatever I do - fail or succeed.

I think this is evident when I write, leaving nothing behind and spilling it all out on the pages. I give it all to my readers - love it or hate it.

The path I'm on is very often my own, veering off the beaten path at the sight of something more interesting or captivating, getting caught in the vines and thorns in order to experience the beauty and intrigue others often pass by. And I always meet the most interesting people along the way..

{Review} {Giveaway} Picking Up the Pieces by Elizabeth Hayley

Picking Up the Pieces

After a myriad of mistakes and a devastating breakup, Lily Hamilton is no longer the impulsive, selfish person she had once been. Now, she longs for the chance to make it up to the one person she knows holds the key to her happiness. But can he get beyond who she was and love her for who she is now? Or is history destined to repeat itself?

Adam Carter has gone through his own metamorphosis. His days of serial monogamy are long gone, and he's been burying his hurt by dating women he has no intention of committing to. But when he sees Lily for the first time in months, he's reminded of the man he used to be; the man he wants to try and be again--for her.

Max Samson is on the downward spiral from hell. Drinking and meaningless sex have taken over his life once again, causing him to revert back to the man he'd been before Lily fell into his life. But when his mother invites Lily back into his world, he suddenly remembers how good it felt to have her there. Even if he might not get to keep her.

Find out how Lily gets her happily ever after in this final installment of her story. This book is recommended for mature audiences due to language and unbelievably awesome sexual content

My Thoughts

This will probably be one of the worst reviews I will ever do. Not because I didn't like the book but because I don't want to be one of those assholes that unintentionally give something away and then all you crazies know who Lilly ended up being with in the end.

Of course the journey to discover who she wanted wasn't an easy task, especially since we got all three point of views this time in the story. So I had to experience all the emotions from all three. It wasn't easy to read and I am sure it wasn't easy to write either.

I couldn't take much of the back and forth, so I decided to be the douche that skipped to the end to see who she ended up with and once I did, I didn't want to read the book anymore because I didn't like it one bit. But I knew if I didn't finish, I would regret it and I guess, in a sense, I wanted to see what the authors were doing. Their mindset to why they picked this person to be with Lilly.

I still thought Lilly was a twat waffle but she definitely grew from the last story. Amanda is still my favorite, with her vulgar mouth and comedic relief. Adam and Max were the same as the last book, as well, with the added bonus of both their points of views. I did think Adam sounded feminine a few times and I wanted to reach inside the story to check and make sure he still had his balls.

When I got to the end, I was glad I didn't stop reading because even though I knew who she chose and initially didn't like it, when I read all the way through, I was satisfied with where all the characters ended up. I didn't want to cunt punch Elizabeth and Hayley anymore and I was glad everyone was getting their HEA.

If you have read Pieces of Perfect and was pissed off with how it ended, then I would read Picking up the Pieces to finally see where all these characters ended up. The banter is still as entertaining (not as funny as Sex Snob in my opinion but still really funny), the sex was still a hot, one handed read AND the characters are all where they should be and you can be satisfied with the ending because she ends up being with one of them.

Overall I give this book a 4.5/5 and if you have not read the series yet then I would get on it. Especially since Pieces of Perfect is now FREE (until the 17th)!!

EXCERPT
Chapter 17: Max
And for some reason that thought calmed me, comforted me even. That ten months ago at nearly this very minute, I could have been doing this exact same thing: eating lunch across from Lily as we talked to each other about how our day had been so far. Or at least we would be doing this exact thing if she ever friggin' got here?
I had just looked down at my watch for the twentieth time when I heard the jingle of the bell on the door. And as I watched Lily stroll confidently toward me, I felt a stupid grin creep across my face. Her black pants fit tightly to her legs, and my gaze traced the length of them before it made its way up to those eyes that I always loved so much. Eyes that I loved even more on days like today, when the sunlight brought out the specks of gold in them that I was sure she’d never even noticed herself.
“Hey, Max,” she said as she pulled the silky strands of chestnut hair around the back of her neck to rest on the front of her shoulder. The sweet smell of her coconut shampoo washed over me, waking me from my trance. “I’m happy you asked me to meet.”
“You are?” Not only was I excited to tell Lily about the job opportunity, I was even more excited at the idea that she seemed eager to see me.
“Yeah, I haven’t seen you in a few weeks, and a lot’s happened.”
She paused for a minute or so to peruse the menu, and I motioned for the waitress to come take our order once Lily seemed ready. I knew she had to be back in about forty-five minutes and didn’t want her to be late. “So what’s up?” I asked. I could tell she was in an unusually upbeat mood, and I was eager to find out why she was so happy.
I didn’t know what I expected her to say. Maybe she’d won the lottery. Or she’d gotten a new puppy. Was it possible that she’d just found out Christmas break was starting a week early? Whatever it was, I hadn’t seen Lily that excited in as long as I could remember. I only wished that when she started to speak, I could have maintained my excitement for her. Or at least faked it better than I had.
But the moment I heard Adam’s name leave her lips, I felt my face drop. Trying to think of anything else than what she was saying, I did my best to tune her out. Unfortunately, my best wasn’t good enough. As hard as I tried, I couldn’t help but hear at least some of the words.

{Review} More Than Him by Jay McLean

More Than Him
by
Jay McLean

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us." - Marianne Williamson

We live in a world of darkness and shadows,
where monsters hide and aim to ruin.
And they did.
They ruined us and turned our dreams into nightmares.
But now we're back.
And we're fighting.
Not just for us, or for each other, but for our light.

My Thoughts

This book was everything I thought it would be. Sweet, angsty, funny, beautiful, and heartfelt. I got SO MANY damn FEELS with this book, the butterflies seemed to take up permanent residence inside.

This book was the continuation from More Than Her, which left off on a major upset that made me want to find Jay McLean and thunder twat kick her for doing that to my poor heart!! But I was anxious for More Than Him, so I guess she did her job
 *grumbles and huffs*

My only little complaint; there was some unnecessary drama that I felt could have been eliminated and the story would have still been amazing (such as the drama with Heidi, it wasn't really necessary to Logan and Amanda's story)...

But other than that I think this book was by far my favorite out of the bunch. I got what I wanted in the end and Jay made me FEEL these emotions from these characters!! I felt the pain, heartbreak, love.... everything!!!

If you hated the way the last book ended, I would pick this one up and I think you will be satisfied with how things ended, but that is all I am going to say. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who wants to read this story.

I ugly cried through certain parts because I remember my heart being broken so many times when I was younger, that Jay McLean brought all those emotions back to me and gaaaahh I was a hot mess!!

I wanted to hug Jake, punch him, love him, fuck him... and then I wanted to punch Amanda, hug her and I was all over the place with every emotion I can think of!!
SERIOUSLY amazing writing and I can't wait to read more from her!!!!

Overall, I give this book a 4.5/5 and if you love these characters, then you will LOVE this book!!!! Totally worth the heartbreak in the last book to be able to mend it in this one!!

Check below for some amazing shit from Jay....

Here is the fan-made playlist if you want to add this in next to the book trailer:

{Review} Four Seconds to Lose by K.A. Tucker

When a gorgeous young dancer walks through his door, a strip club owner must decide whether to follow his rules or his heart in the third novel by the author of One Tiny Lie and Ten Tiny Breaths.

Owning a strip club isn’t the fantasy most guys expect it to be. With long hours, a staff with enough issues to keep a psych ward in business, and the police regularly on his case, twenty-nine-year-old Cain is starting to second guess his unspoken mission to save the women he employs. And then blond, brown-eyed Charlie Rourke walks through his door, and things get really complicated. Cain abides by a strict “no sleeping with the staff” rule. But being around Charlie challenges Cain’s self-control…and it’s been a long time since any woman has done that.

Twenty-two-year-old Charlie Rourke needs a lot of money, really fast, in order to vanish before it’s too late. Taking her clothes off for men makes her stomach curl but Charlie tells herself that at least she’s putting her acting and dancing skills to good use. And though her fellow dancers seem eager to nab their sexy, sophisticated, and genuinely caring boss, she’s not interested. After all, Charlie Rourke doesn’t really exist—and the girl pretending to be her can't get distracted by romance.

Unfortunately, Charlie soon discovers that developing feelings for Cain is inevitable, and that those feelings may not be unrequited—but losing him when he finds out what she’s involved with will be more painful than any other sentence awaiting her

My Thoughts

I LOVE K.A.Tucker's style of writing. She develops amazingly broken characters that make you feel for them and their fuckedupness. There hasn't been a book yet, that I have not LOVED by her and Four Seconds to Lose is no exception... I was addicted.

Charlie is living in Miami because of her father. He has controlled everything she has done in her life and she wants/needs to get out from under his control before she is hurt or killed! She decides to get a job at Penny's where the bar owner, Cain, is still in charge. In order to save up enough money to get out from under the control of her father.

I always loved Cain's character. He was strong, protective and nobody fucked with him because they knew they would not survive it, if they did. He looked out for his employees and did anything necessary to make sure they were all taken care of.

When Charlie meets Cain, there is an instant attraction that you can practically see jumping off the pages. "OH wow what was that spark?? Did I just get shocked???" Oh no thats just K.A. making you feel the attraction from the two MCs!!
(Of course Cain had to get over the initial shock of it all though).

Cain sees Charlie is hiding something and probably hiding from her past so he does what any concerned boss would do and has her investigated. When that turns out to be a dead end, he lets it go and gets to know this reclusive, Charlie, to see what makes her tick. And the fact that he cannot stay away from her doesn't hurt either (or maybe it does). But when Charlie's past and present collide, and she can't find a way out, she does what any sane person would do and runs the fuck away!! But by then, Charlie and Cain are both so deep that it literally hurts both of them.

This story was full of angst, despair, anxiety, and it kept my attention until the very end because I just NEEDED to find out what was going to happen. The only thing I found to "convenient" was what happened to Charlie's father and the fact that nothing really came of it. I was expecting something to happen and when it didn't, I was kind of like "meeerrpp" but then again this book had so much damn angst, it could have choked an elephant so maybe added drama would have been a bad idea.

I loved the characters, the family togetherness that Tucker portrayed and I am always left wanting more from her books!! I know she doesn't tie them all together in a nice bow and leaves a lot to the imagination but I wish I could get more!! I know the characters will be in her other books but once I fall in love with the characters, I am never satisfied with it being left to my imagination =(!! But that is my personal feelings because I am selfish book trollop ;)

Overall I give this book a 4/5 and I want every single one of you to read this book and read it ASAP!!!! You will love it and be left wanting more!!
